We’re all watching the same thing happen right now: AI is becoming a core part of how we work, learn, and live. It’s exciting, but if you’re anything like me, you also feel a deep sense of caution. The promise of this technology is immense, but the ethical and practical pitfalls feel a bit scary.
I want to talk about how we can approach AI implementation not just correctly, but thoughtfully. It’s about being deliberate with every step we take.
The Quiet Risk in an Open Chat Box
I often see companies rolling out simple chat interfaces—just a blank box where employees or customers can type anything. It sounds wonderfully flexible, but I believe this “free text” approach is one of the biggest risks we face.
Think about it: when you give a large language model (LLM) complete freedom, you open the door to all kinds of problems.
- Accidental Leaks: An employee, just trying to fix an issue, might paste a confidential document or a customer’s private information into that chat box. Once it’s in the system, control over that data is lost. We’ve seen these leaks happen in major organizations, and it’s a terrifying lesson in how easily proprietary data can slip out.
- Inconsistent Answers: Have you ever asked an AI a vague question and gotten a vague, rambling answer? That’s what happens with free text. The quality of the response is entirely dependent on how good the user is at writing a prompt. This leads to wildly inconsistent results, which kills trust in the system.
- Jailbreaking: Users can, intentionally or not, craft prompts that trick the AI into ignoring its safety rules, forcing it to generate toxic content or reveal harmful instructions. Our systems need to be smarter than that.
Shifting from Chaos to Control
One solution is to build a thoughtful structure around your prompts. We need to move away from unstructured chat and toward structured, intelligent prompting.
Here’s the core idea: don’t let the user talk directly to the AI’s “brain.” Instead, let the system craft the best possible prompt for the user.
Imagine this practical example:
- Your colleague asks:
- “What do I need to do to get my expense report approved?”
- The thoughtful system does this behind the scenes
- It recognizes the intent, grabs the latest company Expense Policy from your internal drive, and builds this powerful instruction:
- “You are an HR Policy Expert. Using only the attached policy, provide the user with a concise, three-step action plan for expense report approval. The final step must include the specific deadline for submission.”
- The AI generates:
- A clear, three-step numbered list, citing the correct policy.
Your colleague gets a high-quality, accurate answer, and more importantly, the system controlled the input to ensure compliance and accuracy. It made the AI’s job easy and the output reliable.
Human-in-the-Loop
This structured approach brings us to what I believe is the most ethical and effective way to deploy AI: the Human-in-the-Loop (HITL).
We shouldn’t just ask users to accept the AI’s answer. We need to invite them into the process of refinement.
When the system delivers that three-step approval process, the interface could also transparently show the user what happened, and then ask for targeted feedback:

By showing the user what inputs were used (the data) and what the system was trying to accomplish (the prompt), we create transparency and trust. We empower the user to train the system precisely where it needs help.
This is the path to truly ethical and useful AI: We stop asking the human to blindly accept an answer, and we start asking them to help perfect the underlying system. It changes the relationship from user-to-tool into a genuine, collaborative partnership.
